A mood board is a collection of visual references that helps you decide how a creative project should feel. It can be made on paper or in a digital document. The goal is not to create a finished design, but to make your direction easier to see.

Write down the project idea

Describe the project in one or two sentences. Add a few words about the mood you want, such as calm, playful, bold, or minimal. This gives you a simple filter for choosing references.

Collect a small set of visuals

Gather images, colors, textures, shapes, and examples that fit the idea. Start with material you already have, such as your own photos or sketches. Choose references for a reason; a large collection can make the direction harder to understand.

Arrange and edit

Place related items together. Notice repeated colors, shapes, lighting, or composition. Remove images that no longer fit. A useful mood board should show a recognizable direction, not every idea you considered.

Add short notes

Write a few words beside selected references: “soft light,” “warm colors,” or “simple layout.” Notes explain what you want to take from each example and make the board easier to use later.

Turn it into a first action

Use the mood board to choose one practical next step: make a sketch, test a color palette, draft a layout, or gather materials. Keep the board nearby while you work, but allow the project to change as you learn more.

A small mood board can reduce hesitation at the start of a project. It gives you a visual direction while leaving room for your own ideas.
