A new freelance project can start with a vague request and leave both sides unsure about what happens next. A short onboarding checklist helps you gather the details you need before work begins.
Clarify the goal
Ask what the client wants to achieve and who the work is for. The answer can help you understand whether the request is for a video, a design, a written piece, or another deliverable.
Define the scope
Write down what you will deliver, the format, the expected length or quantity, and what is outside the agreed task. If revisions are included, note how many rounds and how the client should send feedback.
Collect materials and references
Ask for the files, examples, brand assets, or background information you need. Confirm how they will be shared and whether you have access to them. If something is not ready, write down who will provide it and when.
Agree on the practical details
Confirm the expected schedule, the best communication channel, and when the client can review the work. Record the price and payment arrangement in the project agreement or written confirmation.
Send a short project summary
Before starting, send the client a brief summary of the agreed goal, deliverables, timeline, and next action. Ask them to confirm that it matches their understanding. This gives both sides a clear starting point.
A simple checklist
- Project goal and intended audience
- Deliverables, format, and scope
- Materials and access needed
- Timeline and review dates
- Feedback and revision process
- Price and payment arrangement
- First action for each person
Keep the checklist short enough to reuse. After each project, update it with questions that would have helped you avoid confusion.
